When Summertime arrives each year, there is one date that ranks high up in the Powerboat Racing calendar: the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race.
First held in 1961, the 190-mile race attracts hundreds of spectators each year to witness teams battling the elements and racing from Cowes to Torquay and back. Navigating their way through various states of sea, the race is not just about speed but a test of the crew’s seamanship too.
Last year, the victors were Drew Langdon and Miles Jennings, who took home the trophy for the 6th time in a row, being crowned champions in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Averaging 68.07 mph, the team completed the 190-mile stretch in just a fraction over 3 hours. However, their fastest year was in 2021, where they set a record of an average speed of 94.70mph – almost four times faster than the first winner, Tommy Sopwith, in 1961.
Drew Langton began racing at a young age and was inspired by his father. His father skippered a vessel for the IJW powerboat racing team. Drew Langdon is a true speed demon and currently holds the water speed record for World Marathon Class A at 109.18 mph.
With the sound of the engines echoing across the South Coast, the race offers a glimpse into the world of high-speed powerboat racing. As we approach the next race on the 24th of August 2024, we encourage members to get out on the water and catch a glimpse of the race.
